If you search for “WordPress developers in India” on Google, the results are a mixed bag. Some are suspect companies with bad business practices (eg: WordPress trademark infringement) and others that offer everything under the roof without any real expertise. Our experience of trying to hire a good WordPress Developer and also being on the other side of the equation with clients can hopefully help you hire a good one.

The following criteria can help you narrow your search to hire a good WordPress developer in India:

1. WordPress Projects

How many WordPress projects has the developer or company worked on? This is important to judge their WordPress expertise. Don’t just be satisfied by looking at their generic portfolio. Explore the different kinds of WordPress projects they’ve worked on.

Tip: Ask for case studies or WordPress projects that talk about integrations and custom WordPress development work.

2. Jack Of All Trades & Master Of None

Does the company or developer work exclusively on WordPress? This is a particularly useful indicator in the Indian context because most people like to spread themselves thin in terms of technologies. Possibly out of fear of losing out on projects.

Someone who spends a majority of their time on WordPress understands the vast ecosystem around it much better, can advise you on the right options (there are 44,000 WordPress plugins to choose from) and can ensure the end product is built to guidelines set out in the WordPress community.

Tip: WordPress provides multiple paths to building a solution. Look for someone who can look beyond the short-term approach of putting disparate plugins together which cause long-term performance and scalability problems.

3. WordPress Contribution

WordPress is successful and thriving even after 10 years of launching. That’s mainly down to the open-source nature of the platform and the community around it.

If you they love WordPress, you will find developers and companies giving back to the WordPress community. It can be in the form of contributing code to the WordPress platform, organizing meetups, sponsoring WordCamps (annual events held in cities across the globe) or just educating people about it via blogs.

Tip: Find out if the company or the developer has an active blog or Git repository.

Unfortunately, in India, you will find a lot of people who claim to develop on WordPress but do not possess deep knowledge about the platform or the latest developments in WordPress.

If it’s simple HTML/CSS work, go ahead and hire any web developer to help you out. But if it’s going to be specialized WordPress work that requires expertise and knowledge of WordPress, you’re better off hiring a WordPress expert.

Why Does It Matter?

While it’s easy to get started with WordPress for a developer with basic knowledge, the lack of depth in their WordPress understanding will show up in poor performance, security issues and coding standards. Not to mention the bad WordPress advice.
